Baby Fever has officially arrived in Sheffield.
Just hours after little Prince Cambridge finally made his way into the world, Royal Baby souvenirs began flying off the shelves in Sheffield.
Early Learning Centre on Barkers Pool unveiled its Royal Baby merchandise bright and early yesterday morning and told The Star that Sheffield families have been eager to grab a little piece of history for themselves.
General supervisor June Davenport explained: “It’s been utter madness!
“My staff and I had been keeping the stock under wraps until the baby was born and we were in early on Tuesday to sort the displays. We have themed romper-suits, bibs, and bottles literally flying off the shelves.
“Our biggest seller is a Happy Land Royal Baby set, complete with a plastic Will doll, Kate doll and baby in a pram. It’s limited edition and everybody seems to want to get their hands on one before they’re sold out for good - we had the same problem with the Royal Wedding set a couple of years ago, we couldn’t keep them in stock and now they’re worth a fortune on Ebay.”
And June says the news of the little prince’s arrival seems to have given the whole city a lift.
She added: “When we were putting signs up in the window, saying ‘Well done Will and Kate’ and ‘Congratulations,’ people were waving and giving us the thumbs up, it’s brought a smile to everybody’s face and, as a city, we’ve really embraced the joy of the occasion.”
M&S Sheffield began selling commemorative tins of shortbread and Royal Baby fizz yesterday morning and told The Star: “We had sold hundreds of memorabilia items by lunchtime, we can’t keep them on the shelves.”
And Carrs Silver of Sheffield has taken their excitement one step further - producing a special commemorative silver cup which they plan to send to the new Royal parents as a present.
Sales director, Andrew Carr, said: “We are delighted to present a 925 sterling silver children’s cup, hand-made in our own Sheffield factory, to the Duke and Duchess to celebrate the birth of their boy.”
The little Prince’s arrival has set champagne corks popping around the region!
Meadowhall will toast Will and Kate’s first-born in style today as Hotel Chocolat kick of celebrations with a ‘champagne and chocolate morning.’
Boost Juice Bar are also getting in on the action, turning their juice blue for one day only and Krispy Kreme stalls will be serving donuts with blue-filling.
In Sheffield city centre, Andrews Tea Room will host its Royal Afternoon Tea, so that their customers can celebrate the happy news just like the Queen - with a lovely brew.
Owner Andrew Whewell said: “We thought we’d get into the spirit of things, so we’ve jazzed up our afternoon tea with union jacks, blue ribbon and blue frosted cakes.”
