Where in the world would you find two incarnations of Doctor Who, the talking car from Knight Rider, characters from Red Dwarf and a contortionist bending her body into weird and wonderful shapes?
As unlikely as it may seem, the answer is Sheffield where a new show – the Sheffield Film and Comic Convention – is taking place at the Motorpoint Arena on Saturday and Sunday, bringing together scores of stars from science fiction films and TV programmes all in one place.
Famous names including Doctor Who stars Paul McCann, Sylvester McCoy and Bonnie Langford, as well as Chris Barrie and Craig Charles from Red Dwarf, will be meeting fans and signing autographs.
Actors from Terminator 3, Torchwood, Star Wars, Batman and Star Trek are also set to appear, along with South Yorkshire-born professional contortionist Pixie Le Knot, who has performed in the TV fantasy saga Game of Thrones.
Pixie – real name Jennifer Keith – is originally from Moorgate, Rotherham, and attended Sheffield High School and Birkdale before training as a circus artist.
The car from Knight Rider, Kitt, and the famous van from the A-Team will be on display, providing perfect photo opportunities for visitors, while enthusiasts can take part in ‘cosplay’ competitions by donning costumes of their favourite characters, which serious devotees aim to make as realistic as possible.
Hundreds of stalls full of memorabilia will also be on display, as well as a ‘comic zone’ where people can meet writers and artists, and a video games area offering tournaments.
The conventions take place around the country, with other venues in cities such as London and Cardiff, but this is the first show of its kind to be held in Sheffield.
n The event runs from 9am to 6pm on both days. Tickets are on sale now, priced £3.30 to £16.50, including booking fee. To buy visit www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk or call 0114 256 56 56.
