It looked like business as usual for ITV in late May: Britain’s Got Talent semi-finals on weekday evenings and then many of us thought the final would be last weekend.
However, that was merely episode 12 of 13, and we haven’t seen any more since, which is a little like a rollercoaster stopping at the top of the ride and then leaving viewers hanging.
We’ve had to wait an age to see who would follow in the footsteps of Paul Potts, Diversity and Ashleigh and Pudsey, to name just a few of the previous winners, but now here’s the moment some of us have been waiting for: Britain’s Got Talent: The Live Final (ITV, 7.30pm).
Naturally there have been plenty of casualties on the road to this night.
Sultry The Voice veteran Alice Fredenham was shown the door after giving an alluring, but sadly underwhelming performance during the semi-finals in late May.
Funnyman Phillip Green also looked like he was a shoo-in for this stage of the game, but even the best comedy acts have had a hard time keeping things together from one show to the next.
As hilarious as he was during his second appearance, it seems he didn’t have the right stuff to win over the masses.
Singers Gabz, Arisxandra, Richard & Adam, pint-sized Welsh dancers Pre Skool, and the band Luminites did impress the masses.
They are all among the acts who have been chosen for the final.
One turn who shone brighter than most is Jack Carroll, the 14-year-old comedian with cerebral palsy.
He has been hot favourite to win, largely because much of his material leaves most professional comics looking like amateurs.
Show-runner and judge Simon Cowell has some good advice for this year’s finalists.
“Believe in yourself, have confidence, have focus and great ambition,” he remarks.
Fellow judge David Walliams is also looking forward to the finale, though he’s just happy to hear Alesha Dixon’s laugh. “It’s a bit like Muttley in Wacky Races,” he smiles.
As ever, viewers at home will be keeping their fingers hovering over the redial button in an attempt to ensure their favourite act wins a coveted slot at this
