Tickets go on sale tomorrow, Friday (May 24), for the last-ever Dancing on Ice tour as Torvill and Dean have announced that they are bowing out of the popular TV show.
Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean are also celebrating the 30th anniversary of their famed Olympic triumph with their Bolero routine, so they are planning that the 2014 tour, which will call into the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield from April 15 to 17 will include celebrations of that landmark.
Jayne said: “We’ve decided that for us it was the right time to finish, also because it was the 30th anniversary of winning the Olympic gold with Bolero.”
Christopher added: “We’re getting ready for Dancing on Ice series nine. We want to make it a celebration and make it as big as possible. We want to make it the best series as it’s the last.”
They have been thrilled at the success of the show, which has become a huge phenomenon with versions of the Dancing on Ice across the world.
Jayne remembered: “We were very excited about the first series. We thought it would be great if it just hapened this once, it will be such an exciting thing to be part of. We didn’t realise how big it would become. It was great to be able to do it for eight series.”
The duo, whose skate blades are made in Sheffield, are planning a special Bolero celebration on the edition of the show on February 14, as it is the exact anniversary of their Sarajevo triumph.
Christopher said: “We haven’t performed the original routine for a long time. We might do it for the last time.”
The couple said that they had been amazed at how well the celebrities had done. Jayne said that they always told competitors that they need to practise the basics hard and then everything would flow from there.
One of their favourite stars was Todd Carty, who provided one of the funniest moments when he exited on his bottom – and a heart-stopping one at the same time.
Who do they want for series nine? Jayne revealed: “I’m hoping David Beckham will come on. He’s just retired, he might need something to do!”
Christopher added: “I’d like to see Sir Alex Ferguson as a judge. I’m sure he watches the show every Sunday!”
