Taste of Christmas past at Rotherham museum

Have your say

MILITARY memories from Christmases of the past are on display at a Rotherham museum, giving a flavour of simpler times.

A collection of 21 cards from the York and Lancaster Regiment’s archives are on show at Clifton Park Museum until early January.

Some of the cards are plain with regimental crests, others are decorative, featuring embroidery, while several depict cartoon soldiers.

The greetings on some of the cards indicate where the sender was stationed at the time, for example France, Iceland and Mesopotamia in the Middle East.

Wendy Foster, spokeswoman, said: “This collection of Christmas cards in a world of technology really brings home the simple pleasures of life and where a small card from loved ones fighting abroad meant more than any other present could ever.”
