SWORD-DANCING skills are to be shown to the next generation when a traditional Sheffield group goes on tour to four schools.
The history of the Handsworth Traditional Sword Dancers can be traced back to the mid 19th century – but the group is always looking for new blood.
The dancers are visiting four schools in a day tomorrow – starting at Handsworth Christian School, then moving on to Ballifield, Athelstan and St Joseph’s primary schools.
They will be demonstrating their own unique Handsworth Sword Dance, as well as an ancient local mummers’ play about The Derby Tup.
Geoff Lester, of the group, said: “We are aware of the need to interest young people in what is right there on their doorstep.”
