Clay shooting competitors helped a new country fair go off with a bang.

The tranquil grounds of Barnsley’s Wentworth Castle were disturbed by firing action when they played host to the finals of this year’s Star Shot contest.

An accompanying country fair brought the landscape alive with activity over Saturday and Sunday. Gleaming in the autumnal sunshine, the plush surroundings made the perfect setting for a celebration of bucolic life.

Thousands of people turned out to enjoy the bird of prey displays, dog shows, archery, music and family fun on offer.

In the spirit of the Star Shot competition, fair-goers were given the chance to try their hand at clay shooting at the event.

Businesses from across South Yorkshire were also stationed in the food and drink pavilion, showcasing the finest local produce.

It was the first time shooting enthusiasts have taken part but the attraction proved such a storming success they have been invited back.

A spokeswoman for Wentworth Country Fair said: “It was a very successful event which brought a lot of people to the area. There’s lots to do at Wentworth so hopefully people explored it and will be coming back.”
