A Sheffield woman who wrote a playful poem celebrating the joys of shopping with a mate has won the Off the Shelf ‘Retail Tales’ competition.

Jan Henry, aged 58, from Parkhead won a £50 gift voucher from Meadowhall, which sponsored the event.

The competition, held as part of Sheffield’s annual literature festival, asked people to indulge in some ‘re-tale’ therapy by combining their love of shopping and words into a piece of fiction of no more than 100 words.

Mrs Henry’s poem about shopping with a friend was chosen as the winner because of its fun use of language and rhyme.

She said: “I only recently started writing again after retiring and joining a writing club. The experience has certainly encouraged me.”
