An ambitious Sheffield college student has launched her own talent scout agency in the city - while studying for a new course backed by former JLS star JB Gill.
Emma Merchant, aged 22, is completing the new Entertainment Industries course at the college, which involves masterclases with JB - who enjoyed international success for five years with boyband JLS.
After recently completing a six month work placement with an agent in London, young aspiring manager Emma is now putting her academic and vocational skills to the test, representing up and coming Sheffield band Frazer.
Emma said: “I’m absolutely loving the course. I’ve learnt so much from it and it’s given me access to some amazing experts in the entertainment industry. Now my ambition is to build my business. It’s great to be able to work with Frazer to build their profile.”
The indie band has already attracted a following in the United States and is now seeking to build its fan base and raise its profile further nationally and internationally.
Heather Smith, principal at The Sheffield College, said: “We are attracting such a high level of expertise for this exciting new course, which will enable our students to get ahead in the entertainment industries or go onto university. Behind every successful music artist are publicists, agents, managers and assistants and there is a shortage of those skills in the industry. It’s great to hear how Emma is using the skills she has developed to further her career.”
Emma’s course subjects include event management, marketing, artist promotion, contract negotiations, publishing and copyright, among many other things.
