And, for five lucky acts from Sheffield, that dream is about to become a reality.

Alex Williams, Ana-Mai Addenbrooke, Donna Ramsdale, Jessica Hobson and girl group MissDemeanor will all be on stage at London's O2 arena tonight (Saturday, January 15, 2011) as finalists of Open Mic UK - the UK's biggest unsigned singing competition.

"We're so excited and have been rehearsing so hard for this," said Vicki Matthews of MissDemeanor, who will be performing an original track, Rugged, for the judges.

The girls have been together for two years and told The Star they can't wait to get out on the stage.

"It's such a privilege to have made it this far and we're ready to go and do our thing!" Vicki added.

The search for a winner began last year with thousands of auditions across the country. Ana-Mai, 19, secured her place in the final thanks to a wildcard from the judges.

"Winning a competition like this would mean everything," she said. "It's so hard to get that first break, especially when you live in the North, so this is an incredible opportunity."

Jessica Hobson is no stranger to big crowds after performing the national anthem before a Ricky Hatton fight in Las Vegas when she was just 16.

"The O2 doesn't scare me," smiled the 19-year-old, who summed up her voice as a cross between Amy Winehouse and Alicia Keys.

Jess wrote her first original song, You Are The One, just last week and will perform it for the first time tonight.

"I've got a big crowd of supporters coming too so I can't wait," she said.

The prize is a 50,000 recording and management contract.
