Christmas is a joyous occasion celebrated by many – but for people battling cancer, it’s a daunting prospect.

That’s why The Star has once again teamed up with Weston Park Cancer Charity to urge generous Sheffield folk to light up patients’ lives this Christmas.

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is asking for support to remember the vital work of the hospital by making a donation to its appeal.

The appeal – sponsored by Napoleons Casino and backed by The Star – is hoping to bring patients a smile this Christmas.

Last year’s appeal raised more than £37,000 and was supported by almost 1,000 people across the Sheffield city region.

But this time around, the cancer charity is hoping for further support to enable continued funding of life-changing research, treatment and care in the hospital.

This year in recognition of all donations received in support of The Christmas Star Appeal, the cancer charity will send out a silver star decoration for people to hang on their Christmas Tree at home.

Whether people choose to hang their star in memory of a loved one, in celebration of Weston Park Hospital or simply in the hope of a better future to come, the charity hope that come Christmas Day hundreds of people will proudly have one of these special stars hanging on their tree.

Caroline Butcher, aged 37, from Aston, who is receiving treatment for cancer at Weston Park Hospital, is encouraging people to support the Christmas Star Appeal so that patients like herself can continue to benefit from the high standard of care.

As well as encouraging donations to the Christmas Appeal, the cancer charity is asking supporters to send a message to be featured in a special Book of Messages and Memories displayed at Weston Park Hospital.

Fundraising manager Helen Gentle said: “This Christmas, we hope that people across the region will help support our Star Appeal and raise as much money as possible so that patients and their families can continue to benefit from the vital facilities at Weston Park.”

“Last year, we had such an incredible response to our Christmas appeal from the local community who helped us raise over £37,000.

“This year, with the generous support of Napoleons Casino we’re hoping to raise even more money to prevent local families in the future going through the difficult ordeal that thousands of families are currently facing.”

n Donations to the appeal can be made via post, online at or by texting WPCC15 followed by the amount you would like to donate – £1, £2, £3, £5 or £10 – to 70070. Supporters can back the appeal on Facebook and Twitter by posting a photo with their silver stars using the hashtag #starselfie.
