Sporting talent reached new heights when climbers from across the country came together for a fast-paced event.

Sheffield’s Awesome Walls Climbing Centre played host to the annual British Speed Climbing Championships, during which competitors of all ages attempted to scale super-steep surfaces in record times.

The centre also staged the British Lead Climbing Championships to find the best climber in the land, and the British round of the Paraclimbing Cup for people with varying disabilities.

During the event there were more than 100 entrants across the junior, senior and veteran categories, with climbers aged between eight and 60 hoping to rise to success.

Zoe Spriggins, centre manager at Awesome Walls, said: “There was a great atmosphere during all the events, particularly the men’s final - the place was buzzing.

“As well as numerous competitors, lots of family and friends and climbing enthusiasts turned out to watch the action.

“Many people said it was the best British Lead Climbing Championships they had ever seen.”

Awesome Walls has another event coming up this weekend to mark the centre’s first birthday.

As well as enjoying free entry on Saturday, visitors can take part in a mini speed climbing competition, yoga classes and massage sessions from 10am onwards.

The anniversary event will also feature a flapjack bake-off, charity raffle and a talk from Mountain Heritage.
