AND here’s one city artist who’s showing the youngsters how to do it.
Sculptor Haroon Mirza, who is based at the city’s S1 Artspace in Trafalgar Street, Sheffield, has just won the prestigious Silver Lion Prize for promising young artist at the globally renowned Venice Biennale festival.
“It feels good,” said the 31-year-old speaking from Italy. “It’s nice.”
Clearly not a man to overestimate his achievements – but judges at the 54th annual festival had no such qualms, praising the way Haroon’s work explores sound through the use of technology and ‘immediately engages the viewer’.
It is his second award in as many years after claiming the Northern Art Prize in 2010.
Penny McCarthy – yes, that’s the Sheffield Hallam University fine arts course leader running the Creative Spark exhibition, and also a friend of Haroon – adds: “We’re so proud of what he’s achieved.
“This is a big deal in the art world and it really helps put Sheffield on the map.”
