BARNSLEY choreographer Gary Clarke has won rave reviews at the Edinburgh Festival.
A Beautiful Hell, a new piece created by Gary for Liverpool Edge Hill University’s contemporary dance company Edge FWD, was presented at Edinburgh’s Dance Base after having already won praise when it was seen as a curtain raiser for Matthew Bourne’s smash hit Nutcracker.
And Festival critics were quick to deliver an enthusiastic verdict on the piece that explores the notion of being an outsider, and features a gritty soundtrack including music from Scottish post-rock band Mogwai and the legendary Roy Orbison.
“By the end I felt as though I had been borne along through a thrilling storm of emotion,” said the reviewer for magazine Scots Gay.
Mary Brennan, dance critic for Scottish newspaper The Herald, wrote: “The full-on energy is crowd-pleasing, the choreography has bite and depth and the dancing crackles with class and conviction.”
