SHOPPERS in Sheffield are swapping sandals for sensible rain-proof clothing as Britain braces itself for one of the wettest summers on record.

Meadowhall shopping centre has reported a 36 per cent rise in sales of Wellington boots during April, May and June compared with last year.

Style-conscious residents have shown a determination to remain fashionable as the rain continues, with sales of high-end brand Barbour jackets and Hunter wellies proving popular.

Bethanie Lunn, Meadowhall’s style and beauty expert, said: “The wet weather has put a bit of a dampener on retailers over the past few months, but it’s great to see that shoppers are fending off the drizzle in fashion-forward force with funky Wellingtons and classic revival styles.”
