Theatre bosses have issued a call to hoarders to give old handkerchiefs a new home.

The crew behind The Crucible’s Christmas musical Oliver! is appealing for an array of colourful squares of material to play a part in the production.

Sheffield Theatres wants residents to raid their wardrobes for hankies in any shade except cream or white, which will be used during a skit with Fagin and his boys.

With just weeks to go until the curtain goes up on the festive offering, which runs from Friday, November 29, to Saturday, January 25, the crew needs people to hand in clean handkerchiefs at The Crucible stage door in Norfolk Street, Sheffield city centre, as soon as possible.

A spokeswoman for Sheffield Theatres said: “The handkerchiefs need to be any colour and will be used on the set of the show. The production needs as many as possible, so if you have any tucked away that you’re not sure what to do with, please support this request.”

The deadline for donations is November 22. It will not be possible to return handkerchiefs to their original owners.
