THE day was extra special for ex-pupil Joe Rose, 28, who also attended and received an early Christmas present – when Nick offered to direct a video for his band’s single.

Nick was already a big fan of Joe’s band Native and the Name – he chose one of the tracks, Plain Song, when he was on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs last year.

The video for the song has now been filmed using a variety of Sheffield locations, including the railway station, Tudor Square, the Winter Garden and Birkdale.

A grand school staircase is shown, with pupils making up the cast.

Joe’s dad Martin works at the school and Nick is close friends of the whole family.

Native and the Name were also featured in a show staged for Nick, featuring songs from their new album.

Earlier Nick was interviewed on stage by one of the pupils, Sam Oliver, after which he took questions from a 450-strong audience.

Pupils combined music and drama skills to create their own version of Nick’s Oscar-winning animation A Close Shave. The school band and the sixth- form choir also performed.
