Mum dies in hoax 999 fire call crash

A WOMAN was killed and her 10-year-old daughter is fighting for life after their car was in collision with a fire engine responding to a hoax 999 call.

The dead woman, aged 36, from Wincobank, was behind the wheel of a Subaru Impreza.

The little girl was a front seat passenger and suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash.

She was said to be "critical" but stable in hospital this morning.

Today it emerged the 999 call had been a hoax and a 17-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of making the call.

Police said the fatal collision happened on Attercliffe Common, at its junction with Weedon Street, at around 10.50pm last night.

Firefighters had been called to reports of a blaze in Rotherham and were rushing to attend the scene when the tragedy happened.

The fire engine, which had been dispatched from Darnall fire station, was heading towards the M1 motorway when the crash happened near Meadowhall.

Horrified firefighters involved in the smash tried desperately to save the casualties. They were said to be devastated today.

A police investigation is now underway to establish the full circumstances of the collision. Firefighters on board the appliance were all unhurt, and are to be spoken to by police as investigators try to piece together exactly what happened. South Yorkshire fire chiefs are also set to investigate.

Additional fire crews from Elm Lane and Aston fire stations were called out deal with the aftermath of the collision.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman confirmed this morning: "There was a fatal collision between a fire appliance and a car at 10.50pm on Attercliffe Common at its junction with Weedon Street.

"The fire engine was travelling to Rotherham along Attercliffe Common, towards the M1. An investigation is underway into the circumstances."
