Marathon bid to help cancer charity

A SHEFFIELD-born journalist is running 12 half marathons in 10 months for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Mark Lingard, deputy editor at the Powys County Times in Mid Wales, has only ever completed one half marathon before, in Cardiff - but is taking on the mammoth challenge to help the paper's year-long fundraising bid for the cancer charity.

Starting in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, in February, and ending in the Welsh capital in October, it promises to be a tough year for the former pupil of Oakwood Comprehensive and Thomas Rotherham College, Rotherham.

Races planned for the year include Silverstone, Liverpool, Edinburgh, and the English Half Marathon, in Warrington - as well as back home in Sheffield.

Mark said: "I enjoyed Cardiff, although perhaps not the last mile, so the challenge should be fun - although I might regret saying that!"

His bid comes as The Star launches its own Business Challenge - asking firms across the area to raise 100,000 for the charity during its centenary year.

Fundraisers also want individuals and community groups to pledge their support and raise lots of cash as part of their anniversary celebrations.
