Laughter and tears for Tom

Family life in Sheffield has provided a rich seam of comedy for Tom Wrigglesworth.

The star of Radio 4 show Tom Wrigglesworth’s Hang Ups, based on phone calls with his dad, is touring with his show, Utterly at Odds with the Universe, coming to Doncaster Dome on Sunday.

He said: “It’s a show about the effect my grandad had on me before he died. I used to spend a lot of time with him when I was little.

“I can hear my grandad’s influence in everything I do. He was a master of DIY and of the practical joke. As a result I’m a dab hand with a power drill. I’m inundated with requests for menial DIY tasks. I find myself in people’s houses mixing Polyfilla,” he joked.

There are tears as well, though. Tom says that the show’s ending became so emotional that he had to tone it down, adding: “If you make people laugh a lot they’re next to crying anyway.”

He says his dad is “quite a character” and realises the portrayal of him in Hang Ups is a caricature.

“He says he does recognise some of it. He’s very aware that you have to create a character.”

The Bradway lad is looking forward to revisiting the Dome, recalling “an odd swimming pool and an ice rink with a hole in it”.
