SHE’s the golden girl of track and field - he’s a superstar of the silver screen...
Now Sheffield’s own Olympic hopeful Jess Ennis has attracted the attentions of Hollywood A-lister Denzel Washington - who says he is ‘fascinated’ by her athletic brilliance.
The 57-year-old Oscar-winner, star of movies Training Day and Glory, has revealed he was in Paris when he caught footage of 26-year-old Jess competing.
“There was a young girl from Great Britain, and I was just fascinated,” he told Radio 1 Breakfast Show presenter Tina Daheley - who is close friends with Jess.
When an excited Tina told the New York-born actor Jess’ name, he replied: “I am in love with her!
“She was just killing everybody and everything - she is brilliant.”
Jess was a guest on DJ Chris Moyles’ Radio 1 Breakfast Show hours later, and the clip of Denzel’s tribute was played to her.
She said: “I am shocked - it’s pretty impressive! I’m honoured.
“I want to meet him now. It’s such a lovely surprise!”
Jess, who was brought up in Highfield, was in London fulfilling media commitments on her weekly Thursday day off from training.
She told the show she is training six hours a day, six days a week, for this summer’s London Olympics.
“I’m ready,” she said. “Training is going well, I’m looking forward to it.”
She said her least favourite of the seven events which make up the heptathlon is the shot put - “It’s very hard,” she said.
But she added: “I don’t enjoy the 800m either. It’s too far and too painful.
“I couldn’t ever do a half marathon.”
Revealing a musical side, Jess said she used to play the trombone when she was younger.
“I was just really keen to learn it - I wanted to be in the brass band!” she laughed.
But she said she gave up after realising the trombone was too heavy to carry - and she now prefers listening to hip hop on her iPod.
Jess, who will marry fiance Andy Hill next year after he proposed on Christmas Eve before a family meal, said she does watch carefully what she eats.
But she revealed she has a sweet tooth - and a weakness for Wagon Wheels, which she took to King Ecgbert School in her packed lunch.
“I need a bit of chocolate every day,” she said.
“I burn it off now, but I worry when I retire I might clap on the pounds!”
And she compared Chris Moyles’ looks to those of her Sheffield athletics coach Toni Minichiello - who she said was older and ‘more chubby’.
Moyles dubbed her trainer ‘Toni Mini Cheddars’ - and joked he ought to let Jess eat more fish and chips.
Afterwards she tweeted: ‘Lovely to meet Chris Moyles and the team finally! So much fun!’
