Garden visit for MU ladies

Tickhill Mothers’ Union members travelled to Wickersley yesterday to visit Winthrop Park – a garden built on a former sewage works.

The gardens, opened to the public in 2005, were specifically designed with the elderly and disabled in mind.

They were created by businesswoman Carol Bowser on the former sewage treatment plant and tons of contaminated soil and scrap metal were removed before landscaping could begin.

More than 12,000 plants and 7,000 bulbs were planted to provide a peaceful escape for the disabled, and the park plays a big part in helping people recovering from ill health.
