School children across South Yorkshire are preparing for battle as a day of sporting fun draws near.

Youngsters from Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham will be going head-to-head in the summer finals of the School Games.

Around 800 children from primary and secondary schools, who won their individual heats for the chance to compete at the top level, will be taking part in the event on Wednesday, July 3.

Barnsley’s Horizon Community College will play host to a day of cricket, golf, tag rugby and tennis competitions at the Sainsbury’s-sponsored event.

Nick Bowen, principal at Horizon Community College, said: “The games are a fantastic way for pupils to take part in competitive sport, showcase their talents, but also learn important values like teamwork. It is fully inclusive, allowing young people the opportunity to be the best they can be.”
