A HOMAGE to rail travel of the past is heading for Sheffield.

Britain’s best-known steam-hauled train, The Cathedrals Express, will make its first appearance at the city’s station on Tuesday April 23.

But the train – which is heading for the scenic Settle & Carlisle route – will be diesel hauled before Britain’s newest steam locomotive, the £3 million Tornado, is attached shortly after its stop in Sheffield.

Marcus Robertson, chairman of trip operator Steam Dreams, said: “The trip across the Pennines behind steam is absolutely breathtaking and, of course, takes in the world famous Ribblehead viaduct.

“It is great passengers from Sheffield can enjoy this trip from their local station.”
