Community choir takes to the stage

The Glee Bah Gum community choir from Southey Green and Parson Cross will take to the stage at St Thomas Philadelphia campus conference hall off Infirmary Road.

The choir has been practising at The Church on the Corner in Buchanan Road, Parson Cross for two months, under the direction of founder Sophie Maxwell, 24.

She said: “Members of the community from nine to 72 have overcome isolation, independence, barriers and prejudices and come together like never before to put together a night which will never be forgotten.

“Many of them had not considered themselves singers or even sung in public before.”

Their repertoire includes Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Don’t Stop Believing, Akuna Matata from the Lion King, Um Pah Pah from Oliver, Any Dream Will Do from Joseph and a rousing finale of All That Jazz.

“We are looking forward to a capacity crowd and guarantee there won’t be a dry eye in the house when you see what these folk have achieved.

Choir member Kirsty Ward, 15, said: “I started work experience at the Really NEET College because I’ve seen the help it gives to teenagers like me and I wanted to be part of this amazing experience.

“Many taking part have had bad experiences in life and to see them giving their time and effort will make it all the more special.”

Sophie said some singers had been lonely, some had been in trouble with the police, while others had struggled with big life challenges, addictions or depression.

She added being involvedhad brought the choir members hope, fun, a sense of purpose and belonging.

The show is from 6pm until 8.30pm on Friday, November 4, at the conference hall opposite Infirmary Road Tesco.
