Expenses trial for MP

A SOUTH Yorkshire MP accused of fiddling his expenses was due to go on trial today.

Eric Illsley, MP for Barnsley Central, faces three charges under the Theft Act on suspicion of dishonestly claiming 20,000 in council tax, service and maintenance charges, repairs and insurance charges, and utilities and communications charges for his second home in Renfrew Road, London.

He has been suspended from Labour and had the whip withdrawn in the Commons.

Illsley, who has held the seat since 1987, denies the allegations. He was due at Southwark Crown Court today.
