People in Doncaster are officially some of the luckiest in the UK, according to official figures from the National Lottery.

Residents who live in Doncaster postcode areas are among the best in the country when it comes to picking out winning lottery numbers.

It has been revealed that 11 millionaires were created in the Doncaster postcode area in the last two years – putting the area firmly on the National Lottery’s rich list.

Doncaster now ranks 12th out of the 121 postcodes across the country for creating the most National Lottery millionaires during this period.

To celebrate this achievement, a new lucky town sign has been unveiled at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

Andy Carter, senior winners’ advisor for The National Lottery – the man who pays out to the big winners – said: “The Doncaster postcode is certainly a very lucky area.

“There are now a massive 4,250 National Lottery millionaires across the country, and with more than six new millionaires made every week there is likely to be another local winner made soon.”

Local winners include Richard Carr, aged 29, who won £1,000,000 on the Merry Millionaire Scratchcard from The National Lottery GameStore last year.

At the time, he said: “It feels absolutely incredible.”

Some 33 people have also won major prizes of £50,000 or more, meaning Doncaster is ranked as 17th luckiest postcode when it comes to winning a major prize.

It isn’t just individuals who have been winning big in the borough; the community has also benefited from the money raised by The National Lottery.

In the last ten years, 1,367 grants worth £81,500,200 were distributed to National Lottery-funded projects in the Doncaster local authority area.

One of the projects which has received funding in recent years is Doncaster Mind, which was given £9,990 in October last year to install computers for the use of people with mental health issues so they could access information online, including job searches.

Doncaster Partnership for Carers Limited was awarded £8,685 at the beginning of the year to provide a telephone befriending and counselling service for carers, offering a support service for those who themselves provide support for another.
