DONCASTER’S Miss England hopeful has put her glamourous evening gown to one side.

Instead, Caroline Welsh is donning oil-smattered overalls after taking on a project to do up a classic car at her home at Moss, Doncaster.

The 17-year-old, who qualified for a place in Miss England after she was crowned Miss South Yorkshire earlier this year, likes to think of herself as an un-stereotypical beauty queen and has recently taken an interest in all things mechanical after she purchased her own classic 1973 VW Beetle.

As the car was not in the best state, it has needed a lot of restoration work and Caroline has turned her hand to becoming a mechanic and has become a bit of a car expert.

Cars aren’t the only tomboy hobby of hers either as if Caroline is not under the bonnet of her 1973 VW Beetle, she can be found trying her hand at anything from clay pigeon shooting to archery and is currently training for her first triathlon.

She said: “I grew up with two older brothers so I guess I am a bit of a tomboy at heart. I certainly like to think that I help to break the mold when it comes to beauty queen stereotypes.

“I love to get my hands dirty and really enjoy the great outdoors and just seem to find myself getting involved in unusual sports and hobbies.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed learning about cars while I have been restoring my Beetle and am really excited about finishing her off, getting her on the road and taking her to car festivals.

“Its definitely a new-found hobby for me and one I will continue to be interested in.”

But she is still looking forward to the more glamourous world the Miss England contest will plunge her into next month.

She said: “I am really excited about taking part in Miss England in June, even if I don’t win the whole experience has been amazing. Not only have I made some great friends but I have increased my confidence, self-esteem, ability to speak in public and overall poise, posture and grace. I would recommend it to anyone.”

Caroline will battle it out for the coveted Miss England crown with 60 other regional winners on June 26.

Tickets for the event in Leicester are on sale.
