Deaths crash teen survivor is on the mend

A TEENAGE girl left fighting for life in a horrific crash which killed her boyfriend and two of her friends is off the critical list.

Chloe Newby, aged 16, suffered life-threatening injuries when the car she was in was involved in a head-on smash with a car travelling in the opposite direction over the Christmas holidays.

But today a South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "She is no longer critical and is making steady progress".

Chloe's boyfriend Jonathan Scott, 17, of Park Road Conisbrough, who was driving the silver Vauxhall Corsa they were in, died in the crash along with the young couple's friends Robert Tepper, 17, of Harlington Road, Mexborough and Lauren Birkett, 16, from Mexborough.

The pals were travelling along Adwick Road and were trying to overtake a Fiat Punto when tragedy struck.

A Vauxhall Astra had just made the same overtaking manoeuvre moments before the collision at 8pm on Monday December 27.

Jonathan and Robert were pronounced dead at the scene.Lauren died a short time later after she was rushed to hospital.

Chloe, who is an A-Level student at Mexborough School Specialist Science College, was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary, where she remains.

South Yorkshire Police is carrying out an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

Two men - a 19-year-old from Swinton and an 18-year-old from Mexborough have been arrested by police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and bailed pending further enquiries.

Doncaster deputy coroner Fred Curtis opened an inquest into the three deaths last month.

At the time he said he did not yet know the full details of the case.

But he urged young drivers to be careful when they are at the wheel.

Funeral services have all been held for Chloe's friends who died in the crash.
