SCRAP metal dealers have been targeted by police in a crackdown in Barnsley.
Officers from Cudworth Safer Neighbourhood Team were looking for dealers carrying metal or trying to sell it on. Goods were checked and they had to prove they had the correct documentation to trade as a business.
The joint operation involved Cudworth Safer Neighbourhood Team and Barnsley Council and was organised following a spate of thefts and reports of unregistered dealers in the area.
A number of dealers received 300 fixed penalty tickets for not complying with regulations.
Pc Leanne Reis, of Cudworth Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "There has been a high number of complaints regarding thefts of metal items in the area."
