Thousands of people turned out for a colourful Pride event in the ‘biggest party Doncaster has ever seen.’

A ‘Walk of Unity’, led by people carrying mining banners and The City of SheffieldPipe Band, wound its way through the town centre from Market Place to Sir Nigel Gresley Square to kick off the street festival on Saturday.

Live music acts performed on the main stage and shoppers browsed stalls at a Rainbow Market as part of the event, organised by volunteers for charity Doncaster Pride to celebrate the LGBT community and unity.

Organisers have praised those who attended for making this year’s event a success - despite thunderstorms that followed blazing sunshine.

“What an amazing day!”, said a statement on the Pride website.

“You came out in your thousands to be a part of Doncaster Pride and even the weather didn’t stop the biggest party Doncaster has ever seen.

“Thank you and see you all next year.”

Revellers also praised the festival with one describing it as the ‘best experience of my life.’

Others called for the event to become a two day celebration, as in other cities such as Manchester.

The headliner of the free festival was pop singer Sonique, sponsored by Doncaster gay bar Crystals, and several tribute acts as well as other artists also took to the stage.
