Sheffield is developing a well-deserved reputation for being the outdoor adventure capital of the UK.
Cliffhanger is one giant taster session stretched over a whole weekend. The festival is great value for money with 90 per cent of outdoor activities free of charge once you have paid your entry fee. We’re conscious that budgets are tight so we’ve cut the entry price for adults to £6 and kept it free for accompanied under 16s.
This year we’re back at Millhouses Park making use of every element of the venue from the river and woods to the tennis courts, bowling greens and state-of-the-art water play area.
With so much happening, it can be hard to know where to start, so here are our highlights so you don’t miss out.
There are climbing towers and bouldering walls plus a live big screen feed from the Senior British Bouldering Championships which are being held on the world’s biggest indoor bouldering wall down the road at the Climbing Works. Test your nerve by jumping or even flipping off the 5 metre high FreeDrop platform onto the giant airbag used to train World Cup mountain bikers and Olympian snowboarders.
With the Tour De France rolling into town soon we’re celebrating cycling in a big way. Five times British and European men’s elite trials champion Danny Butler and his team of record-breaking stunt trial bike riders are back in action with their Extreme Mountain Bike Show. Younger riders can have a go on the Pump Track and toddler friendly Bike Balance course.
The Sheffield City Peloton project explores every aspect of making a bike from smelting the iron to decorating it. Join in their ‘Science of Cycling’ activities and bring along your own bike for a full safety check. If it passes the test, cycle over to our ‘Tour de Cinema’ marquee to enjoy our hour-long ‘Best of Sheffield Adventure Film Festival’ extreme sports films loop.
If you think you’re hard enough, test your upper body strength on the Crag X Pull Up machine then challenge your legs on the Watt Bike racing stand. If you’re still standing, give slacklining a go – imagine tightrope walking on a trampoline and you’ll get the idea!
Cool down by kayaking or try Aqua Zorbing – it’s a bit rolling inside a human size hamster wheel on water. Little ones with a head for heights won’t be able to resist the Rope Ladder Climb up to the treetops. See if you can get yourself out of a tight corner with our artificial cave system – guaranteed to bring claustrophobes out in a sweat.
Cliffhanger aims to involve and inspire people to try adventure sports and celebrates the elite athletes at the top of their game. We’d also like to thank our many exhibitors and sponsors.
It’s worth remembering that the outdoor leisure industry provides jobs and income for many local people. In fact, mountain bike campaigning group Ride Sheffield recently gathered turnover figures from a number of businesses that are directly or indirectly related to outdoor pursuits and found that 13 firms contribute just shy of £40m to Sheffield’s economy each year. It’s clear that having fun is an increasingly serious business!
