A LEADING cancer charity has said a huge thank you to Sheffield residents who took part in a fundraising and memorial campaign over Christmas.
The World Cancer Research Fund organised the Candle of Hope event at Sheffield Cathedral over the festivities, which saw people make a donation in return for a candle which they burned in memory of loved ones they had lost to the disease.
Teresa Nightingale, general manager of the charity, said: "I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part because it was down to them that the event has been such a success.
"In particular we would like to thank staff at the cathedral who gave people the chance to remember those they've lost to cancer at a time of year when friends and family are together.
"The candle offered a physical reminder of a loved one as well as hope for the future by helping us raise awareness of cancer prevention.
"Scientists estimate that by making changes to the food we eat, increasing our amount of physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight about a third of the most common cancers could be prevented."
