AN OLYMPIC torchbearer who played for the Sheffield Steeldogs returned to the city to thank the fans who bought the torch for him.

Fans flocked to the rink at iceSheffield in Attercliffe to have a picture with Ben Bowns and his torch.

Ben, 21, from Swinton, carried the flame through Warmsworth in June, less than a month after he left the Steeldogs for Hull Stingrays.

Olympic torchbearers are entitled to buy their torch for £200 when their leg of the relay is over - but Ben had no idea the fans did a collection to purchase it for him.

“It’s something I’ll never be able to repay,” he said.
