Bookie is a real favourite in competition

WHEN it comes to bookies' favourites it's odds on that you can count on this happy fella to be among the front runners.

Betting shop manager Alan Porter, from Dore, has proved a real winner in a competition to find Britain's best bookie.

Together with his colleague Tracey Jackson, he has been running the Ryan Holmes Sports Betting Shop on Middlewood Road, Hillsborough, for two years.

And when he was asked to enter a competition organised by the Racing Post he considered himself to be a real outsider.

So when he received a letter saying he had been shortlisted for betting shop manager of the year he had a smile as broad as Doncaster Racecourse.

Alan said: "After numerous rounds I was very proud to make the regional final and final 24.

"There were 10,000 shops which entered the competition and I was not only the best in Sheffield and Yorkshire but in the best 24 shops in the country. Naturally I'm very proud indeed."
