AN actor born in Chesterfield has received a Bafta for his outstanding contribution to cinema - including portraying a man with severe deformities in acclaimed film The Elephant Man.

John Hurt, aged 72, is also well known for starring in movies such as Midnight Express, Alien and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in a career that has spanned six decades.

His lead role as the disfigured John Merrick required him to spend seven hours in make-up.
