A PHARMACIST from Sheffield Children's Hospital has proved he measures up to the role after scooping a prestigious regional award for his dedication to patient care.
Gavin Hunter, whose position involves measuring and dispensing doses of medicine to young patients, was awarded the Yorkshire and Humber NHS Pre-Registration Pharmacy Technician of the Year Award.
And amazingly Gavin has only worked in the job for six months.
He picked up the prize after scoring top grades at Sheffield College while studying his NVG Level Three in Pharmacy Services.
The 25-year-old, who lives in Chesterfield with his partner Becky and four-year-old stepdaughter Ruby, said: "I couldn't believe it when I won.
"Everyone in the pharmacy department was so happy for me - and I only started here in July!
"I've always loved children as there are plenty in my family - so it's great to be working with them and to be recognised for it. It's a brilliant step in my career."
Gavin, who trained in a community pharmacy before joining the team at the hospital, picked up a 50 cheque and a honorary plaque after beating six other nominees from across the region.
He said: "I hope to go into medicines management one day and this award will come in handy. It's quite a relief after all that coursework I did at college!"
Caroline Ashworth, one of his college tutors who nominated him for the award, said: "Gavin has worked extremely hard to achieve his results and this award is great recognition of his dedication to his role.
"He is a fantastic ambassador for the trust."
Dr David Upton, clinical director of pharmacy and medicines management at the trust, said: "Gavin is a shining example of how far a fantastic work ethic and determination can bring you.
"We are thrilled he has won such a prestigious accolade and this shows how important it is to ensure staff are considered for awards like this which help shape their careers."
