AN ARTIST is returning to his roots after more than 35 years in the newspaper industry.

Michael Groves, aged 56, is leaving his role at The Star after more than a decade to return to painting.

He said: “This is chance to do something that I have always wanted to do. I’ve been a frustrated artist spending a lot of my time painting at home or over the weekend.

“I now have the chance to go out and paint on location.”

Michael’s career started when he held his first solo painting exhibition in Chesterfield in 1973, while studying at art college aged 16.

A Star reporter got in touch saying they were unaware of anyone younger to have their own exhibition and wanting to feature him.

But what Michael didn’t know was he would be working for the newspaper years later. He began at The Star in 2000 after working as an artist for the Derbyshire Times.

Michael has launched a new website - www.michaelgrovesartist.co.uk - to show his work.
