ONE of Sheffield’s most serene beauty spots has been transformed into an art-lovers paradise.

The city’s Botanical Gardens was alive with colour and excitement as the first day of annual exhibition Art in the Gardens got underway today.

This year’s event boasts an impressive line-up of more than 300 artists, with notable names from across the UK billed alongside the cream of local talent. Among the ‘premier artists’ displaying work are Sheffield-born Steve Elliot, famous for his award-winning pastel paintings of the Derbyshire landscape and Stephen Todd, who is based in the city and paints landscapes, seascapes and human form.

Coun Isobel Blower, Sheffield Council’s member for culture, sport and leisure, said: “It’s great that Sheffield is able to attract such talented and creative artists to the city. There’s so much to see and do that it will be difficult for anyone to fit it into just one day. It will be a fantastic event.”

The Art in the Gardens show is also open from 10.30am until 5.30pm tomorrow. Admission for adults is £6 and accompanied children under 16 can enter free.
