A South Yorkshire project to take music into schools has been boosted by a £1,000 donation from Sheffield’s John Lewis store.
The grant for the Music in the Community programme will help fund a new Come In! project, which will offer music education and experiences for children in primary and special schools who are unlikely to attend workshops or concerts with their families or go on a school trip to a concert.
The target for 2013-14 is to visit 20 primary schools across South Yorkshire and engage around 3,000 children and 90 teaching staff with a variety of musical projects led by animatrice Polly Ives.
Also involved will be professional musicians from Ensemble 360 and internationally renowned tabla player Kuljit Bhamra.
A tour in the autumn will feature Stan and Mabel, a new commission from Paul Rissmann based on the book about a dog and cat who live in a block of flats, by Bradford-born author and illustrator Jason Chapman.
