Portraits of the artists at gallery. On the Face of It: Photographic Portraits from Sheffield’s Collection, at the Graves Gallery in Sheffield city centre, puts a face to some famous artistic names. The display showcases a selection of Sheffield’s portraits by photographers such as Cecil Beaton, Ida Kar and Brassai.

Works of art in themselves, these black and white photographs highlight the skill and technique of these photographers, as well as putting a face to some well-known names. Pictured is J B Rustomjee’s photograph of Stanley Spencer painting Helter Skelter at Hampstead Heath, one of the Graves’ best-loved pictures.

The exhibition, at the gallery in the Central Library, is open Wednesdays to Fridays from 10am to 3pm and Saturdays from 11am to 4pm. It runs until Saturday, November 30.

The gallery also features a small display celebrating one of Sheffield’s greatest social activists, Edward Carpenter (1844-1929). He was a pioneer champion of gay rights, the emancipation of women and the environment.
