LOCAL NORTHERN SOUL CONNOISSEUR DONALD MORRIS LOOKS BACK :

I’m Donald Morris, known to my friends as “Mopsey.”

I live in Stocksbridge now , but I lived near the famous King Mojo Club many years ago when it was open.

My first soul club experience was at the Mojo, owned then by a youthful Peter Stringfellow , then when that closed I visited the “The Twisted Wheel” All-Nighters in Manchester a few times late 1960s

I had most of the Motown , Stax label etc soul records that came out in the UK from 1960 , but I just wanted to hear the records played in a club and not at home all the time.

I had a few friends who were older than me and kept telling me about all the clubs that they went too that played Motown and soul music , that was around 1968 .

I was hooked after seeing brilliant acts like Stevie Wonder , Ike and Tina Turner and many more at the King Mojo here in Sheffield and at “The Wheel”.

Other favourite clubs of mine were “ Heartbeat” in the 1960’s, which later became Samantha’s , Baileys (The Cavendish) , the “Penny Farthing”, the Top Rank, Nethedge Hall , The KGB, Ponds Forge, “Davys”, “Route 61”, “Inner Soul”, the “Victory Club” ,” City Limits” , and many more in the Sheffield area.

I’m still amazed the scene is so strong but just too many clubs for my liking that you can’t go to every one. I’m not knocking it because in my day there was only around 10 Northern Soul clubs back then in the whole of the country!

I just hope to be doing the All Nighters , Weekenders and soul nights like I’ve been doing for the past 46 years till the end , I love it and I always will - the soul scene is in good hands with all the young ones and will still be going for another 50 years I hope!

Five of my favourite all-time Northern Soul records are:

1 Tony Michaels “I love the life I live” (Golden World) .

2 Edwin Starr “I have faith in you” (Ric Tic )

3 Saxie Russell “Psychedelic soul” (Thomas)

4 Duke Browner “Crying over you” (Impact)

5 The Dramatics “Inky winky wang dang do” ( Wingate)
