Bounce and the congregation bounces with you - especially when the brethren is more than 2,000 Reverend and the Makers followers and the sermon is to have fun, writes Graham Walker.

So it came to pass at the church of Sheffield’s O2 Academy on Friday night.

And Sheffield’s indie chart stars will bounce back for two unique concerts to play all four albums, in their entirety, over two nights in October. Details below.

From the moment he graced the stage, larger than-life charismatic leader Jon McClure, the Reverend himself, had the ‘Yorkshire’ chanting Rev Army jumping to it and eating out of his hand.

And if he needed help it came from his disciples - angelic voiced keyboard and trumpet heralding wife Laura, guitar minister Ed Cosens, bassist Joe Carnall and drummer Ryan Jenkinson.

What they delivered was as much a ‘religious’ experience as a gig, with fans in seventh heaven - singing along, bouncing, crowd surfing and otherwise paying homage in a 90-minute mix of classics and new songs, promoting latest and fourth top 20 studio album, Thirty Two.

Detonator, the album’s first track, brought the band exploding on stage, with a spectacular orange, red and yellow album colour themed light show - a short fuse to Bassline, State Of Things, then new single, The Only One.

Other highs included Shine The light, Devil’s Radio and I Spy, featuring Steve Edwards, The Wrestler, Different Trains, Out Of The Shadows and Heavyweight Champion Of The World.

It continued outside, with Jon entertaining scores of fans, some who couldn’t get a ticket, to a free acoustic show in the street,

Guest support The Liberty Ship are on the crest of the wave after Jon helped to rebrand the young Sheffield quartet, formerly Searching For Evidence. The search is over. This ship has set sail for the charts.
