The cast of a musical set in the 1950s enjoyed a spot of ‘rock and hair rollers’ as they had a day of retro fun in Sheffield with a makeover designed to get them in the mood of the period.

Sheffield youth company Splinters Theatre Group are in rehearsals at the moment for Happy Days the Musical, based on the classic 1970s sitcom that made a huge hit out of the character The Fonz, played by Henry Winkler.

The group found a new way to get into character by visiting Sheffield 1950s-inspired salon Purdy’s and vintage shop Vintedge in Abbeydale Road, Nether Edge.

Danni Smith, who plays one of Pinky Tuscadero’s Pinkettes, said: “It’s unbelievable! You really feel like you walked right back into the 50s with its checkerboard floor and antique hair dryers hanging on the wall.”

“We really were lucky to have two such fantastic spaces to come and get the feel of what the 1950s were really like,” said Happy Days choreographer Aggie Gryszel.

“The girls have never looked and felt so in character.”

The cast members spent all afternoon being primped and styled by hairdresser Jane Infanti and Vintedge owner Sally Mastin and treated to the sounds of the Fonz’s favorite tunes on the vintage record player.

By the end of day they were ready to put on their dancing shoes and rock and roll the night away.

Happy Days is a new musical written by Garry Marshall with original music by award-winning composer Paul Williams. The show brings back all the favourite characters from the TV series, including the Cunningham family and cafe owner Arnold.

The production will be full of full of retro costumes, roller skates and classic hair styled by Purdy’s owner Jane.

Aggie said: “We would like to thank Jane and Sally for all their help and enthusiasm.”
