The announcement comes as Arctic Monkeys prepare for Friday night’s headline gig at the Glastonbury Festival, which forms part of a summer tour.

Tickets for Sheffield, priced £25 and £35, go on sale next Friday, July 5, at 9am. Full details and links below.

It will be four-years since the chart-topping Sheffield band played their first and only concert at the venue.

Simon Bailey, marketing manager, said: “Arctic Monkeys only previous Motorpoint Arena show was a sell-out concert in 2009. More recently in June 2011 they played two  nights next door to the Arena, under a giant marquee in the outdoor grass bowl  - all sell out shows.

“Hometown gigs always have a special feel and we are delighted to see the Arctic Monkeys return to rock the Arena again.”

Front man Alex Turner, on lead vocals, keyboards, lead and rhythm guitar, Jamie Cook, on lead/rhythm guitar, Matt Helders, on drums and Nick O’Malley, bass guitar, are one of the region’s biggest music success stories.

First four albums Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not (2006), Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007), Humbug (2009) and Suck It and See (2011), all hit the number one spot.

They’ve had two number one singles, 2005 debut I Bet You Look Good on The Dancefloor and When The Sun Goes Down.

Fifth album, AM, will be released on September 9.

It was recorded in Rancho de la Luna in Joshua Tree, California and features guest appearances from Josh Homme, who co-produced their third album Humbug.

Other guests on AM include drummer Pete Thomas and ex-Coral guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones.

Speaking to Newsbeat at February’s NME Awards, drummer Matt Helders talked about the recording process for fifth album AM.

He said: “It’s just been us four working stuff out like we used to I guess.

“We had a bit of a break. It’s always weird when you first get back into it to know what kind of songs we write any more.”

The autumn UK tour will start at Newcastle Arena, on October 22.

Other cities and venues on the tour are Manchester Arena (October 23), London Earls Court (Oct 25), Liverpool Echo Arena (Oct 28), Cardiff Motorpoint Arena (Oct 29), Birmingham LG Arena (Oct 31) and Glasgow Hydro (November 1).
