Tim Horton, Crucible Studio
Music in the Round is presenting an evening of Beethoven piano sonatas tonight on its new Steinway C piano that Tim Horton premiered last weekend at the organisation’s Exploring Schubert festival.
He will be playing Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in A flat Op.26, Piano Sonata in B flat Op.22, Piano Sonata in E minor Op.90 and Piano Sonata in A Op.101.
Music in the Round said: “Beet-hoven never ceased to experiment in his piano sonatas. The Sonata Op.26 (a favourite of Chopin’s) starts with a lilting slow movement, while the slightly earlier Sonata Op.22 is altogether grander.
“The two-movement Sonata Op.90 contrasts the tense, terse opening with a gentler song-like second movement.
“The lyricism of the Sonata Op.101, one of his most intimate piano works, evoked, according to Beethoven, ‘a series of impressions and reveries’ – where music of luminous beauty is contrasted with an exciting March and the rapidly changing moods of the finale.”
The new piano has been bought through innovative sponsorship and art auction fundraising initiatives as well as pound-for-pound match funding from Arts Council England’s Catalyst scheme. More than 150 people contributed.
Tim Horton said about the new piano arrival: “The arrival of the new C adds an important factor to the status of Music in the Round. Word always spreads quickly amongst pianists when a venue has a wonderful instrument and I feel sure that we will be seeing some big names perform at the Crucible Studio in the coming years.”
