HE’S played at the Olympics, had an American number one - and now South Yorkshire singer Louis Tomlinson and his band have swept the board at the MTV awards.

One Direction, who were met by excited screams from their fans, won three awards at the star-studded MTV Video Music Awards in LA - for best pop video, best new artist and most share-worthy video.

Overwhelmed 20-year-old Louis sported a new, swept-back haircut as he joined bandmates Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Liam Payne on the stage to collect their trio of awards, all for the promo for their huge hit What Makes You Beautiful.

An excited Louis, who was brought up in Stoops Lane in Bessacarr, Doncaster, told fans on Twitter later: “Can’t believe we won three awards! Thank you everyone!”

A delighted Simon Cowell, who put the group together for his X Factor talent show, also tweeted: “Congratulations 1D. I’m very proud of you. Celebrate!”

Louis’ mum Johannah was up in the early hours to watch video coverage online - before heading off for work as usual later.
