Sheffield Wednesday legends John Sheridan and David Hirst helped kick off a cancer charity event held at the Genting Casino in the city centre.

The Willow’s Wish night was arranged to support city woman Chelsea Megson, who after giving birth to daughter Willow several weeks ago was found to be suffering from the condition.

Two nights of fundraising activities have together raised around £17,000, some of which will go to the Christie Charitable Fund, the Manchester-based cancer centre.

Chelsea’s dad John was also at the event, which featured ‘Hirsty’ as compere.

The event was organised by family friend John Tompkins with help from wife Jackie and daughter Alex, who put together a line-up featuring vocalist Jamie B and comedian Jimmy Bright.

It followed an earlier event at the venue which tied in with a boxing title fight.

John said: “We’d like to thank everyone for their generosity in helping both Chelsea and Willow, while also supporting the Christie Hospital.”
