Fresh from a triumphant set at the Y Not Festival, Sheffield’s Reverend and the Makers have revealed a new album and tour.
The quintet were one of the star attractions at the Peak District music festival at the weekend – and have now unveiled details of their new album, tour and accompanying film, ahead of a performance at the famous V Festival.
Frontman Jon McClure, nicknamed ‘the Reverend’, said he was ‘so excited’ to release details.
Mirrors is the fifth studio album from the band – Jon, fellow songwriter and guitarist Ed Cosens, bassist Joe Carnall junior, keyboardist Laura McClure and drummer Ryan Jenkinson – andis due for release on Friday, October 9.
And fellow musician Carl Barât, of The Libertines and Dirty Pretty Things, said: “You can always rely on the Reverend for a volley of lyrical grenades, but ‘Mirrors’ is a magnum opus.”
Jon, aged 33, says: “Ed and I became resolute to make a record that we loved.
“Why not indulge the overwhelming urge to not play games anymore and set about making some art we are actually proud of rather than the release tour festivals repeat cycle we’d been on since forever?
“ And so we took the files we’d been diligently recording off to Jamaica and spruced them up a bit whilst making a film. The result is the best thing we’ve ever done in my opinion.
“The reaction when I play it to people is like nothing I’ve seen before, except maybe the first album.”
And the special CD & DVD version of Mirrors is available with a film by director Roger Sargent, filmed in Jamaica to accompany each song on the album.
To coincide with the release of Mirrors. Jon is also releasing a book of his lyrics and poetry, illustrated by The Specials’ Horace Panter.
The Lyrics and Poetry of Jon McClure with Illustrations by Horace Panter features every lyric from Reverend and the Makers as well as poems.
The band have also announced a tour to promote the album –including a show at Sheffield’s O2 Academy on Saturday, November 14 –although the band have the little matter of performances at V Festival first.
