REVIEW - Elephant Keys & Friends, Leadmill

SNOW stopped play when this show – a musical tapas of some of the best of what unsigned South Yorkshire has to offer – was originally due to happen.

Had it gone ahead the heat of some of these 10 acts would surely have melted the white stuff from the roof of Sheffield's enduring live music haven.

Topping a busy night across two stages were these reliable rockers, remarkably headlining the Leady main stage for the first time. One of our most watchable acts, Phil Goodwin and chums did plenty to justify the billing through a set bristling with gutsy guitars still deserved of a broader audience.

Among those they brought along were the promising EK-descended White Buffalo, debut gig from a trio with the wallop and chugging guitars of QOTSA and a gusto all their own.

While the likes of The Beaus and Dirty Jeans occupied the earlier slots The Dead Delta took us back to Reading 1976 with their mix of smoking blues rock, and Alvarez Kings filled the 'big bar' with a vibrant set that had a whiff of Vampire Weekend and other festival favourites about it.

Ably filling the midriff slot, The Tivoli gave a committed account of themselves ahead of the Rotherham band's new EP.

Vocalist Lee McMahon - who could always get as a job as a Howard Webb double if the music doesn't work out - is an assured frontman with a voice that reminds a little of Delays' Greg Gilbert, if a much deeper version. Solid stuff.
